Egypt have dismissed suggestions that Mohamed Salah refused to come off
The Liverpool forward scored a spectacular 70th minute equaliser for his homeland on Monday
His 57th international goal, the strike preserved Egypt’s unbeaten start to 2026 World Cup qualification and their place at the top of Group A.
The Egypt captain’s latest international appearance wasn’t without its controversy after it had been claimed he refused to be substituted.
In stoppage-time, substitutes Mostafa Fathi and Nasser Maher were both seen on the sidelines ready to come on, but it was only the latter who was introduced - in place of Ahmed Amin Aoufa.
Mostafa Fathi was believed to be coming on in place of Salah, before sitting down on the bench again.
The Egyptian FA has shut down any suggestion that the Liverpool star refused to be withdrawn.
Egyptian Football Association (EFA)
“There is absolutely no truth to the rumours that Mohamed Salah refused to leave the pitch
“Salah was not going to be substituted off in the first place. Hossam Hassan was content with only bringing on Nasser Maher.”
Salah is poised to be caught in the middle of another club vs country debate later this summer after Egypt recently confirmed they wish to call him up as an overage player for the 2024 Olympics
The tournament overlaps a significant part of Arne Slot’s first pre-season in charge at Anfield
