Alan Shearer has backed Liverpool to "go the distance" in the Premier League title race this season.
The Reds are currently top of the table after 20 matches played
Few predicted Jurgen Klopp's side to be in the mix for the Premier League crown before a ball was kicked
The club's summer transfer business has helped fuel a successful run of results.
City are still considered the favourites by many, though Shearer has no doubts Liverpool will push Pep Guardiola's men all the way
Shearer
"They are going the distance,”
"There is no doubt about it, they are going the distance. They will be right up there come the last weekend of the season. They are a really good team.
“Van Dijk is back to his best, Trent (Alexander-Arnold) is having a great time, they have an unbelievable goalkeeper and when you have the brilliance of Mo Salah, you have every chance.
"They have gamechangers which can do that coming off the bench, they have so many options.”
Shearer may well have talked up Liverpool's title chances, though this was something Van Dijk was keen to avoid
Van Dijk
“I'm not going to speak about any of this, I never did and I won't do it now either,"
"It's far too early to do that. We are at the start of January, we have players leaving now, we have players coming back from injury, so let's see what it brings.
"If in February or March we are still up there obviously we have to get the last push going and see if we can squeeze it out.
"But for now we just focus on the game ahead and don't look at others, (and just) try to improve ourselves.
"That's always been the experience and it brought us one success over the last six years to win the Premier League and hopefully we will see what happens at the end of the season."
