Anthony Gordon might have been denied a dream transfer to Liverpool before the June 30 PSR deadline, but he could still move to Anfield this summer.
The Reds did not make an official offer to Newcastle United after being contacted by the Magpies
Newcastles desire to sign Jarell Quansah as part of any deal making it a non-starter
But Liverpool have been credited with interest in the England international for a number of months, and it would be no surprise if such a saga now rumbles on
Reports on Monday claimed that Gordon’s head had been turned by his boyhood club after becoming aware of the possibility of the switch.
while the Reds are currently well-stocked on the left-wing, that could change later in the summer if, for example, Barcelona tested their resolve for Luis Diaz.
As things stand, should Gordon join Liverpool, he would be denied his desired squad numbers.
He wore number 10 at Newcastle last season, having initially been allocated number seven
Gordon also adorned 10 during his final half-season at Goodison Park.
While the Reds’ famous number seven would become available if Diaz moved on and could be up for grabs as a result
Alexis Mac Allister occupies the number 10 jersey.h
Meanwhile, currently wearing number 18 with England at Euro 2024, he would be denied that jersey too with Cody Gakpo the current occupier at Anfield
if he wished to wear a familiar shirt number, he could take over Liverpool’s number 24.
He adorned such digits for two seasons at Everton, with the jersey unoccupied at Anfield since Rhian Brewster’s move to Sheffield United in October 2020.
Should Gordon opt for a new squad number if he did end up joining the Reds, he could currently take his pick from numbers six, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 23, 25, 27, 29 and 30
Yet it wouldn’t just be a desired shirt number that Gordon could be denied if he moved to Liverpool - he might not be permitted his name on the back of his shirt either!
In Kaide Gordon, the Reds already possess such a name in their ranks.
Consequently, should the young winger not leave the club on loan this summer, Liverpool would need to differentiate between the pair.
Admittedly, it is a little premature to be getting your Anthony Gordon Liverpool shirts printed anytime soon
But should he end up joining the Reds, he’ll have to get used to a slightly new look on the back of his jersey.
