Xabi Alonso remains on track to complete a remarkable season at Bayer Leverkusen
Liverpool are regarded as Alonso's most likely destination this summer, though both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are believed to be keen on reuniting with their former midfielder
Anfield of course was also once the home of Alonso, who looks set to have a big decision to make over his next career move in the coming weeks.
Below is a round-up of the latest links regarding the 42-year-old and interest from the Reds.
Leverkusen make stance clear
Leverkusen's CEO Fernando Carro has reiterated the fact he expects Alonso to remain put in Germany and stay true to the contract he signed
Carro
"Xabi Alonso has a contract until 2026 and there is no reason to doubt that he will stay here. In football, you never know what will happen but I have a lot of trust, we have a good relationship."
"There have been plenty of examples over the years of players and coaches not staying true to their clubs after receiving a more favourable offer - something Leverkusen could be about to learn the hard way this summer.
Leverkusen left-back Alejandro Grimaldo, who is enjoying an extraordinary debut season at the club, has admitted he and his team-mates are trying not to consider the potential exit of Alonso.
Grimaldo
"It is something that we have not considered yet. Is soon. He will know what decision to make. It is clear that I would like to continue improving alongside him.
"I had very good coaches throughout my career, both at Barcelona and at Benfica. But Xabi is something special. There are not many coaches like him in the world of football."
Pep Lijnders claim
Lijnders has effectively already ruled himself out of the running for the role, but talkSPORT host Alan Brazil recently suggested the opposite
"I am told the players wouldn't mind the number two, Pep taking over."
Dean Saunders added:
"I heard that as well. At least Lijnders knows what's going on there. It's difficult, who do you give the job to? That club is that big."
