Billy Hogan speaks out on FSG criticism and future plans for Liverpool

Liverpool chief executive Billy Hogan has explained how he and the Fenway Sports Group leadership team at the Reds deal with criticism.

Next month sees FSG mark 13 years in charge of Liverpool

In the years that have followed the takeover there has been much change at the club, both on and off the pitch, with the value of Liverpool now past the £4bn mark

the capacity of a now world-class Anfield to rise to 61,000 in the coming weeks, up 15,000, from 2010

a balance sheet that is one of the strongest in European football, with revenues pushing £600m per year;

and Premier League, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup and EFL Cup triumphs.

FSG have had to cave to fan pressure after misreading supporter sentiment on several occasions

FSG have long come in for criticism around their lack of spend when compared to some of their rivals

the owners’ focus in a sustainable business model seen as something of a handbrake by some in terms of Jurgen Klopp delivering even more than he already has done when it comes to silverware.

Hogan, who was part of the FSG team that acquired the Reds and who has been working full-time for the club since 2012, has the responsibility of guiding the club on a day to day basis

Hogan explained how he, and ultimately FSG, deal with pressure and criticism.

Hogan:

"You get a weekly understanding of where you are in terms of results on the pitch

“Sometimes results on the pitch can be difficult, that’s part of the passion and energy, from our standpoint, and I certainly consider myself extremely fortunate to be in the position I’m in, comes the pressure of performance and the pressure of winning.

"That’s the mindset at Liverpool, we are focused on winning trophies, focused on silverware.

“We have been very successful in the last few years and that is something we’re intent on continuing.

“That (criticism) is part of the job. I think that the most important thing from my perspective, and our perspective as a club, is to be focused on what we are trying to achieve. Sometimes matches can go different ways for various different reasons.

"We also need to be focused on what we are trying to achieve long-term, and ultimately we are trying to run the club in the best possible way we can.”

Hogan reaffirmed the FSG stance around sustainability

Hogan added:

“From a sustainable standpoint, everything we do is in the best interests of the club. There is going to be criticism, there is going to be pressure, but that is part of working in an environment that is as public as Liverpool is.

“It comes with the territory, you have to keep your head down, keep going and keep doing the best that you can for the club.

“The team that I work alongside cares very deeply. Of course they care about results on the pitch but they also care greatly about the club itself and doing the right thing for the club.”
