Curtis Jones reacts to Anthony Gordon's Liverpool comments amid transfer saga

Curtis Jones could prove pivotal in any potential future move the Reds might make for Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon.

The Magpies, fuelled by PSR concerns, offered Liverpool the chance to bring Gordon to Anfield this summer

a move that would have seen promising defender Jarell Quansah head in the opposite direction.

But Liverpool had zero intention of letting Quansah leave Merseyside, scuppering Newcastle’s hopes a deal for Gordon

Those concerns now look to have been arrested with Newcastle on the brink of selling teenage winger Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion for $41m (£33m/€38m) and Newcastle academy graduate Elliot Anderson for $44m

it is understood Liverpool remain interested in the Newcastle winger. And while a move this summer is unlikely to emerge, the Reds do have a secret weapon they could utilise in the form of midfielder Curtis Jones

In an interview back in April, Gordon was asked who he counts as his footballing idols, and who his best friends in football were.

Gordon

“Steven Gerrard was my football hero growing up,”

“Coming from Liverpool, he was like a God in Liverpool, and he was an unbelievable player.”

Gordon added

"I'd say I've got three," Gordon added when asked about his best friends in football.

"Curtis Jones, Tommy Doyle, Elliot Anderson. Mixed bag there. Some club, some international."

it would seem naïve to think, given the speculation, Gordon and Jones would not have discussed what the former moving to Anfield would look like

Liverpool know Newcastle are in a stronger situation now than when they were offered Gordon

However, the Magpies will likely have learnt their PSR lesson following their chaotic pre-July 1 business. In the future, they will have to be more proactive in selling players, to avoid doing business at a disadvantage.

that could play into Liverpool’s hands in any future Gordon chase.
