Alan Shearer has doubled down on his suggestion Diogo Jota dived to win Liverpool a penalty
Plenty has been said about the two spot-kicks involving the Reds, with some of the opinion Jurgen Klopp's side were fortunate to receive penalties in both instances
Jota's incident was certainly the more controversial of the two after the Portuguese forward went to ground as he rounded goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
Contact on the forward was minimal and appeared somewhat delayed,
VAR agreed the right decision had been reached. Ex-Newcastle striker Shearer could not hide his anger at this call
Micah Richards asked the Premier League's all-time top-scorer to explain Jota's thought process from the perspective of an attacking player. Offering his opinion, Shearer said: "Yeah, he f****** dived. Pretty simple."
Shearer continued:
"No way was it going to affect the result, the best team won.
"They battered Newcastle and should have scored seven or eight. But that is as clear a dive you will ever see. What was it, three paces after it [contact]? There was a tiny bit of contact, but he could have just stayed on his feet and tapped it
“I was amazed both of them [VAR and Assistant VAR] can look at that and think ‘It’s ok, it’s a correct decision and he hasn’t dived’. Do me a favour."
Garth Crooks also slating Jota for what he perceived as a theatrical fall inside the box.
Crooks
"Twenty years ago you had to be assaulted in the box to get a penalty - now you only need to act like a dying swan,"
"Nevertheless [Mohamed] Salah was the difference between the two teams. He scored a goal in open dplay, missed a penalty, scored a penalty and was involved in two assists."
