Dominik Szoboszlai, may not quite be hitting the heights of the early days of his Liverpool career, but this was most certainly a step firmly in the right direction, the Hungarian willing to do the dirty work and having sufficient composure on the ball to start making an impact as the hosts tired under the weight of relentless Liverpool possession.
The confidence visibly coursed through his veins once again after a difficult few weeks.
It was fitting Szoboszlai applied the finishing touch in the fourth minute of injury-time when smashing home from close range after being found by substitute Darwin Nunez’s cross.
Summer signings Szoboszlai and Endo both epitomised the grit and extra quality Liverpool required to sidestep a potential banana skin. They are learning quickly.
Salah struggle not alone
So continues Mohamed Salah’s wait for another landmark moment. For only the third time in the Premier League this season, the Egyptian failed to provide a goal involvement as he went seeking the 200th goal of his Liverpool career.
In truth, it took a remarkable save from Sheffield United goalkeeper Wes Foderingham to prevent the double century. But this wasn’t stellar Salah, the winger substituted on 67 minutes – his earliest such departure in a Premier League game since March 2022
Nor was it particularly impressive from Liverpool’s attack as they too often flailed up against a defence that had conceded 39 times in 14 previous Premier League games.
Luis Diaz, after a strong start, once again faded, while Cody Gakpo, recalled in place of the benched Darwin Nunez down the centre, was too often hounded out by the massed Blades ranks.
And although Nunez could claim an assist for Szoboszlai’s clincher, the Uruguayan had missed a gilt-edged chance to seal the game himself when sent clear by Alexander-Arnold. It’s now eight games and counting since the forward last scored for Liverpool.
