Alexis Mac Allister once told the story of how seven-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi defended him from their Argentinian teammates after the Liverpool transfer target was taunted by the rest of his squad.
Mac Allister suffered a small setback during his settling in period, as he would become the butt of a joke with many of his teammates, based on his appearance. Thankfully, his captain came to his aid to ensure it would never happen again.
Mac Allister:
"I remember everyone called me ‘Colo’, which is ginger in Argentina,"
"I don’t like it much and he told the teammates that. He said, ‘He doesn’t like to be called Colo, so don’t call him that!’."
"I was red, completely red. I didn’t want even to say hello. I was really nervous even to meet one of the best players in the world, but it was fantastic, of course.
"It’s something I’m not going to forget. It was magic when my dad played with [Diego] Maradona and I could train with Lionel Messi. We are very proud of it."
Liverpool's potential new signing has come on leaps and bounds since that moment, and is now able to share the common bond with his hero of being a world champion following last December's World Cup
