Liverpool players and supporters will need to be patient with Arne Slot because succeeding Jurgen Klopp is not straightforward, according to David James.
Slot arrived from Feyenoord to take the Liverpool job, having been considered the perfect man to continue the fine work of Klopp.
The Dutchman has made a low-key start to life in the hot seat at Anfield, with no transfers made yet
The loss to Preston prompted a few grumblings of discontent but former Liverpool goalkeeper James has backed Slot to get things right over time.
James
“Liverpool had a succession plan for Jurgen Klopp, Arne hasn't just been brought in at the last minute so I think he will be the right man,”
“Liverpool have managed to get it very right in terms of recruitment in players, so I have confidence this will be the same with the manager.
"From the bits I have heard and the bits I have read, there's confidence and positivity around Arne, as well as realism.
“Jurgen did so well for Liverpool, won so much, and it is going to be so hard to replace Jurgen as the character.
"Arne is not going to be Jurgen Klopp in the way that he speaks, but he might bring something to a highly talented group of players that Jurgen was unable to do.
“That missing ingredient is multiple Premier League titles and I think there is an expectation that group of Liverpool players should be successful in the Premier League more frequently than they have.”
Slot put a positive spin on the Preston defeat,
Asked if he saw some of his ideas on show in the game,
Slot replied:
“Yes, definitely. I've seen this a lot during the training sessions, maybe a bit more than today but that also had to do with the playing style of the opponent.”
"We controlled the game completely and only conceded one shot. We were a bit unlucky to lose 1-0 given we only conceded the one shot.
“We had some good build-up moments and had
some good chances in the first half, the second half I didn't think we created that much which is normal because there were a lot of young players in the team who didn't play in their normal position sometimes as well”
We couldn't have asked more from the boys in the first two weeks.
“We've worked really hard, tried to implement ideas and it's not that we're only bringing new ideas, a lot of things that have already been done here have been really good."
