Graeme Souness believes Liverpool still need to improve their midfield and has given his verdict on the upcoming campaign.
The Reds have already added two key signings this summer, in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szboszlai
but face a further overhaul in midfield, with Jordan Henderson and Fabinho seemingly nearing moves to Saudi Arabia.
Southampton’s Romeo Lavia is reportedly being targeted by the club and Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has given his thoughts on the current midfield options available to Jurgen Klopp.
Souness:
“I think Liverpool to be successful still need some more (midfielders) in there,”
“I think if you analyse their team, the goalie is good enough, the back four is more than good enough. The hardest thing to get is goals and they’ve got that.
“The key is midfield, they’ve got to get a different type of midfielder in there. I think they should have done it last year and they’ll be successful or not, depending on what their midfield shape looks like and who they get in.”
Souness added
I don’t know (Szboszlai), I know next to nothing about him. I only saw the clips when we were buying him.
“Mac Allister, I really like; his age, attitude to the game, he’s a workaholic, he chips in with goals and he’s creative. So, nothing to dislike about him.”
The former Liverpool boss believes Thaigo Alcantara only thrives against certain clubs and that big games “pass him by”. He applies the same verdict to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s ability in midfield.
Souness
“(Alexander-Arnold) is the best defender in this league at using the ball, we know his shortcomings, but there’s no one better than him at distributing,” Souness continued.
"Can he do that in midfield? I think he can in the lesser games. I think against the Man Citys and that, he might get caught short in there, but that’ll be for Jurgen to decide.”
