Harvey Elliott has admitted he is prepared to knock on Jurgen Klopp’s door regarding his Liverpool starting opportunities should he deem it necessary.
The 21-year-old has impressed for the Reds this season, returning three goals and seven assists from 44 appearances
However, only 21 of his outings have come from the start.
In impressive form in recent weeks, the midfielder, is well-placed to start against Atalanta in the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday night if Klopp rotates his side
While Elliott admits he is not one to kick up a fuss, he also conceded that he does want to be starting more games for Liverpool.
Elliott:
“I’m young but not a kid anymore,” he said. “I’m a man, I’m growing up quickly and I feel like I need to take responsibilities into my own hands
“If that means knocking on the gaffer’s door, it’s going to have to happen. At the same time, I do need to wait for my opportunities, I do need to be patient.
“But when I get them, I just want to take them. I want to cement my spot in the team.
“For me it’s just about making sure I’m analysing the game (when I come on), seeing where I can exploit different teams.
“Seeing the areas I can put myself in and attack from that way.
“Quite frankly, I want to be starting games. I want to be the player walking out rather than coming on. It doesn’t mean I’m not grateful for coming on the pitch.
“I’m very grateful for every opportunity that I get in a Liverpool shirt.
“But for me, it’s just about kicking on for myself and kind of cementing my spot in the team. I’ll do everything I can to do that.”
Elliott continued:
“It’s in training, it’s in the games. For me, it’s just about being patient. I don’t really like to kick up too much of a fuss.
“I’m part of the team. I don’t want it to look like I’m being selfish.
“Whoever goes out plays, deserves to go out and play. There’s no doubt about that.
“Every player is unbelievable and very talented.
“It’s just about staying patient and when I do get the opportunities, I need to make sure I take them myself
“I feel like I’ve been doing that to an extent this season. I’m never satisfied, I need to keep going and keep putting in these performances.”
Elliott revealed that he hasn’t had any conversations with England manager Gareth Southgate regarding a possible senior international call-up
Elliott stated
“I haven’t had any (conversations with Southgate) at the moment,”
“My main priority is just Liverpool. If I put in the performances at Liverpool, you never know what’s going to come around the corner.
“With the Under-21s with England, I’m so happy to represent my country. For me it’s just about focusing on Liverpool, putting in the performances that I can do with the team.
“If I’m called upon at the end of the season, I’ll be very happy and honoured and willing to go, but it’s not going to happen if I’m not putting in the performances with Liverpool.”
