Steve McManaman has urged Darwin Nunez to "temper that anger" in the right way after the Liverpool match-winner was fortunate to stay on the field in the 2-0 win over Brentford.

Nunez struck twice in stoppage time to send the Premier League leaders Six points clear

The Reds striker, however, was lucky to stay on the pitch having thundered into a late challenge on Brentford defender Nathan Collins having already been cautioned for removing his shirt

McManaman thinks Nunez needs to start channeling his aggression in a more productive manner, saying:

"Of course he is [fortunate to stay on]. It's 94 minutes, he's scored two, he's on a yellow card, why is he even thinking of diving into that challenge?

"But that is Darwin Nunez, fortunately or unfortunately, whatever way you look at it. He does mad things like that. You knew when he came on after 65 minutes today, he would get a yellow card.

It's just part of his nature. He can't stop diving into challenges, he can't stop looking at players and wanting to get physical like when he came on against Manchester United.

"You have to take all of him. He misses chances, he scores chances. He gets yellow cards, he batters people. It's just the way he is.

“He is just a full-blooded South American who still, well you can't say he is still learning as he's been at Liverpool nigh-on three years, but he has to temper that anger in the right way."

Nunez was returning from a suspension having sat out Tuesday's victory over Nottingham Forest and head coach Arne Slot conceded his No.9 might have seen red on another day.

Slot later said

"It would have been realistic if that was a yellow,"

"I couldn't have complained if he had got a second yellow for this foul. So we were a bit lucky in this situation but being lucky once in a while is nice."
