Trent Alexander-Arnold says he is focused on just being "the footballer" rather than a specific position as he continues to progress in his hybrid-midfield role.
The Liverpool full-back has been playing in a more central role when the Reds are in possession and has been named as a midfielder in the latest England squad.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live from the England camp, Trent said:
"I think for me it’s Trent the footballer, that’s what I have always seen the game as. You know, play the game not a specific position, that’s the idea I have always had when I have stepped onto the pitch.
"Just do what the game needs, rather than what I need, specifically what I have been told to do, and the instructions I have been given, but also do what is right for the game.
"If the game needs me to be more defensive and more focused on defending space, or a bit more of a man marking setup, or running off the ball, or creating with the ball, whatever the game needs."
The 25-year-old, who has struggled to establish a regular spot in the international team despite club success, has been working on changing the way his role is played.
"I think with an idea of moving into midfield and the idea of playing in midfield, I still have those ideas in my head. Everyone sees the game differently. I have always had that view [of being a creator], and when I first transitioned into becoming a full-back, I wanted to change how it was played for me, not just for the game in general, but more so for me,"
Trent added.
"How I can get the best out of myself by doing those things, how I can still perform to the level I need to, and I expect from myself, and offer those things to the game from a full-back position. To change how people interpret the role and how people see it.
"I am sure in a midfield role that will potentially be the same. I want to create and do things on the pitch, I want to do what I am told to do and whatever role that maybe, I am sure I will find a way to make it work, that brings the best out of me."
