Jamie Carragher has given his verdict on possibly moving Trent Alexander-Arnold into midfield.
The 25-year-old starred against Manchester City, scoring Liverpool’s equaliser to earn an impressive point
Trent was deployed in his usual right-back role, regularly drifting into midfield as an inverted full-back.
Gareth Southgate opted to use the Liverpool man in centre-midfield during the international break
Carragher stated that Alexander-Arnold has the ‘skillset of a midfield player’, while pointing to his flaws as a defender
Carragher
“I think the closest you could get with Jurgen Klopp is, Liverpool have never really had back-up for Trent in terms of a right-back. It’s Joe Gomez, who’s really a centre-back,”
"It's difficult to get back-up because he’s such a good player and he’s always going to play."
“But, for me, going forward, I would love Liverpool to acquire a top-quality right-back, not a young kid coming through, and in some games say [to Alexander-Arnold]: ‘We’re going to push you forward today. "We’ll have someone else that deals with the winger, one v one.’
“I think that could be a progression for Liverpool and Trent, if he gets more games in midfield
"The goal he scores today, Liverpool haven’t had a player that can score from that range, apart from maybe Szoboszlai, since Steven Gerrard; once he gets 20-25 yards from goal, you think he’s got a chance of scoring.”
Carragher added:
“Basically, you want Trent on the ball, with time and space to get his head up, and there are very few passers of the ball better in world football."
