Jurgen Klopp has revealed why Liverpool had no intention of losing Caoimhin Kelleher in the summer despite ongoing speculation
The 25-year-old is set to make his sixth Premier League appearance on Sunday when the Reds host Fulham
Kelleher has made 27 appearances for Liverpool to date since being handed his debut in 2019
With game-time limited as a result, there had been suggestions last season that Kelleher would look to move on in the summer in search of being a first-choice elsewhere.
Klopp admits talks were held about the goalkeeper’s future at Anfield and a possible loan exit in the summer.
While he’s aware that Kelleher wants to play more, he insists that it would not be in Liverpool’s interests to let him move on.
Klopp
“Yeah (he is ready to be a number one at a club like Liverpool), no doubt, no doubt,” Klopp told reporters ahead of the Reds’ clash with Fulham. “We see him every day in training.
"He is exceptional, an exceptional talent.
“Maybe we don’t mention his name often enough. John Achterberg, from day one when I came in, he told me this will be our homegrown boy who will make it.
"Since then, we see every step. He is now a man. He was a boy, now he’s a man. A top goalie, no doubt.
“He is in general a focused person. We will not see him in a bar tonight celebrating the clean sheet. That’s not a problem. Caoimh is prepared for that, he wants that now.
“We had discussions in the summer, obviously, about it. But as long as we don’t have a solution, we cannot loan players. He is homegrown and all these kinds of things.
“So we have to make sure, first and foremost, the first responsibility is to do the best for Liverpool. And then we have to see how we can sort it.
“But now obviously, for him, it is a situation he did not want to have but obviously, somehow, he has because he wants opportunities. He wants to play. Now he will get a few games, definitely, and I trust him.”
