Jurgen Klopp's Harvey Elliott regret as Arne Slot 'faces two-club battle' for Liverpool star

One of Jurgen Klopp's final regrets at Liverpool was not utilising Harvey Elliott more frequently - now the versatile midfielder could be set for a move.

Last season, Elliott, 21, had his most successful season at Anfield, scoring four goals and providing 11 assists in 53 appearances.

However, a nasty foot injury disrupted the start of this campaign, leaving him playing catch-up on the rest of the squad.

Under Klopp, Elliott was often on the periphery, but his performances led to his then-manager confessing that he should have been included in the starting XI more often.

However, with starts proving elusive under Arne Slot, Elliott's lack of game time has reportedly alerted several clubs.

According to Sky Sports, Borussia Dortmund and Brighton and Hove Albion are monitoring the situation of the England U21s international.

The young player's limited game time has piqued the interest of both clubs, who have excellent track records for nurturing young talent.

Elliott was an unused substitute in the Reds' 1-0 defeat away by Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final

Injuries and the fact that Slot has settled on a midfield tripartite of Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones has resulted in Elliott not starting a single Premier League match this season.

His sole start came in the 2-1 away win over Southampton in the quarter-finals of the League Cup, where he was named man of the match.

Elliott was also a fringe player when Klopp was still at the helm.

The German boss even admitted he wished he used Elliott more. Last season,

Klopp said: "It's not like this that I go back and think, 'OK, what did we all do wrong here and there?'

"But if I regret one thing a little bit it's that Harvey didn't play often enough maybe. It was in a very important and intense period. January, [with] a lot of injuries, he played really good.

"He was probably our best player, right wing, right midfield, all these kinds of things. Everybody came back and he had less opportunity.

“Then he didn't start anymore. [He] came on [and had] a big impact but it's really nice that he could show."

Elliott made it clear that he is trying to learn everything Slot wants him to do.

In an interview with The Times,

Elliott said: "With the games coming thick and fast, it's now just about practising the new style of play that we've learned with the gaffer and how we're going to keep applying it in games.

"It's completely different to what we used to play before, so it's like if you're performing, if you've got a show, you keep going over and rehearsing it and rehearsing your lines or your part of the play.

“That's kind of what we're doing at the moment. We just keep going over and over things and making sure we're getting it to a tee, really."
