Klopp explains tactical tweak that made 'everything better' in Liverpool win at Arsenal

Updated: Jan 8

Klopp highlighted the half-time change that enabled Liverpool to beat Arsenal in the FA Cup

A late own goal from Jakub Kiwior was added to by Luis Diaz in stoppage time at the Emirates

Klopp changed his 4-2-3-1 system and dropped Harvey Elliott back into midfield while switching out Diaz to the right and Darwin Nunez to the left with Cody Gakpo leading the line.

The result was a much-improved and more threatening performance that eventually led to late goals

Klopp

"Everything was better in the second half. It's difficult to prepare for something like what Arsenal did all game but particularly the first half,"

"Double 10, 4-4-2, two wingers wide, massive threat, so we had a few days time to prepare for the most difficult game with a slightly different team.

"Timing was bad for pressing in the first half, that made it tricky for the midfield and nearly impossible for the defence, so we had to defend deeper in the last line, block balls but that is football as well, you have to show desire, passion and determination. That is what the boys showed.

"Then we changed things obviously as well, quite a bit and that caused Arsenal problems, that is how it is.

"These little parts cannot always be that influential but as little influence as I had in the first half on what they did, we just used the information from the first half and tried to do better. Everything was better.

"We created our chances, we defended them better and that is how it is.

"A home game is an advantage but when you are better in the first half but don't score it is normal that you get in a rush.

"So it barely gets better or usually doesn't. And we felt more and more comfortable in the game.

"We scored an own goal and you cannot plan that but had chances to score earlier but scored late, which is still fine and we all know a cup competition is not about being the better team, it is about winning the game and we had much more good moments in the second game and deserved the next round. But it's clear we could have lost tonight as well."

Klopp added:

"Can we draw anything from the title race? No. I can't, anyway. So if we draw Manchester City now in the next round, can we play Bournemouth, Chelsea, next FA Cup and then Arsenal again here, so it is really tough.

"I can't read anything and I know this league is crazy difficult but you have to find solutions, I have said it plenty of times, a thousand ways to win a game, you just have to find one. It just sounds much easier than it is.

"We don't have a problem with belief and confidence, it is just that we are not bothered about the things you speak about.

"We can read the calendar and it is January. It is cold outside and you just have to stay warm as you can and play as well as you can and that is what we try."
