Liverpool face Martin Zubimendi stumbling block after identifying £52m transfer target

The 25-year-old defensive midfielder was a key figure in La Liga throughout the 2023/24 season, featuring in 31 matches

Zubimendi's stellar performances didn't go unnoticed as he continued to shine for Spain during Euro 2024 this summer

Zubimendi played In Spain’s 1-0 group stage triumph over Albania and stepping off the bench in their 2-1 win against England in the final.

His remarkable form has seemingly grabbed the attention of Arne Slot, who is eager to bolster his midfield options for the upcoming season.

The Athletic reports that the Reds are considering triggering Zubimendi's £51.7million release clause.

However, snapping up the midfield maestro might not be straightforward for Liverpool or any other suitor at this point.

Earlier in the summer, Zubimendi expressed his intentions to stay put at Sociedad for the forthcoming season

Zubimendi Said During the euros

"Where am I going to play next season? I'm going to be at Real Sociedad."

"I have a contract with Real Sociedad and that's where I'm most comfortable."

A product of the club's youth system since 2016, following his move from Antiguoko in 2011, Zubimendi has climbed the ranks

Now on the cusp of his prime, the talented number six has clocked up 144 league appearances and bagged seven goals for Sociedad

However, tempting him away from his boyhood club could be a challenge, not least because of his hefty €60million (£51.7m) release clause.
