Liverpool manager Arne Slot has yet to add to his squad since taking over from Jurgen Klopp, but that looks set to change as the Reds step up their push for midfield reinforcements.
Slot, who arrived from Feyenoord after the conclusion of the 2023-24 season, has been waiting for his full squad to return from international duty. The Reds had several players involved in the latter stages of the European Championships and Copa America.
Liverpool have lost a couple of senior players, with Thiago and Joel Matip among those to leave Anfield. However, neither man featured in the latter part of last season due to injury.
Slot has indicated his team will only dip into the transfer market if they identify the right player who can improve the side in a relevant position. Now, though, it appears they have done just that.
According to The Athletic, Liverpool are eyeing up a specialist number six before the transfer window shuts at the end of August. While no name has been mentioned, the player in question is understood to be based outside the Premier League.
Liverpool have tried a number of combinations in midfield since adding Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch last summer There has been interest in Endo this summer, but Liverpool have so far knocked back bids as they explore the market.
The bar is really high for new signings because we have so many good players so it is not so easy to first find a player to meet those standards and then is he available?"
Slot said earlier in the window. "Then we have to find an agreement with them, so it is not always easy to find a player who can help us but Richard is working hard on it and let's see what comes from this.”
Stefan Bajcetic could yet have a part to play this season but is on his way back after a lengthy period on the sidelines. Gravenberch earned praise from Slot after playing in the deeper role during pre-season, but a new addition still looks likely.

“I think Ryan did really well in that position [against Manchester United] and we have other options as well,"
‘The best way to judge it is when we have all the players back and we still haven’t, but a club like Liverpool always keeps its eye open to see what’s available, players who can strengthen the squad and that is what we — Richard (transfer chief Richard Hughes) mostly — but me as well are looking to do. That is not particular to one position. We constantly evaluate the squad.”
