Liverpool supporters have understandably been left frustrated at the Reds’ lack of transfer business so far
But that looks set to change in the weeks ahead.
Richard Hughes previously predicted a ‘crescendo in August’, while Arne Slot has conceded he would be surprised if the club don’t add to his squad before the window closes on August 30.
With a new management team being in place and Euro 2024 and Copa America both taking place, this slow start was expected.
While Slot and Hughes have spent the past month assessing their inherited squad, it will only be this week when the Dutchman will have his full ranks together
Although Alexis Mac Allister surprisingly made a premature return to pre-season, linking up with his team-mates on their tour
Liverpool won't boast their full squad back together for pre-season until Tuesday.
When the full Reds squad are back together, Liverpool’s business will be poised to ramp up
it is only then when the club can start to sanction departures for fringe players with their ranks bolstered by returnees
Admittedly, there have already been signs that have teased the Reds’ possible future summer business
For example, in the past week or so it has emerged that Liverpool bosses will hold talks with Ben Doak regarding his short-term future and a possible loan exit,
Liverpool have rejected bids from Marseille, PSV Eindhoven, Red Bull Salzburg and Southampton for Wataru Endo, Sepp van den Berg, Bobby Clarkand Fabio Carvalho respectively.
with a lack of incoming business, Kopites’ frustrations also grew regarding what areas of the squad the Reds actually intended to strengthen.
Liverpool have pointed to the presence of Endo, Mac Allister and Stefan Bajcetic when presented with queries concerning possible interest in new holding midfielders.
Yet the Reds’ failed move for Gordon has shown their hand a little when it comes to such transfer stances
While the Liverpool squad might be well-populated as well on the left-wing, interest in Gordon remains.
while a centre-back might not have been perceived as an immediate priority when linked with Yoro, agreeing to Gomez’s departure demonstrates a willingness for such a stance to change
Should the Reds’ resolve for the Japan international be tested further, an opening could be created in the squad for a new holding midfielder in the squad as a result.
Consequently, the fact that Liverpool agreed to a swap deal for Gordon and Gomez does say more about their transfer intentions beyond just the two players in question.
Including young players who went to the states Liverpool have:
five senior goalkeepers, three right-backs, seven centre-backs, four left-backs, 11 midfielders, and 11 forwards currently competing for first team squad places.
Admittedly, 16 of those 41 players are still young enough to qualify as Under-21s
Elsewhere, Van den Berg, Clark, Carvalho, Doak, Owen Beck, James McConnell, Tyler Morton, Kaide Gordon, Jayden Danns all have their suitors
along with the ongoing uncertainty regarding the likes of Kelleher, Gomez, Endo and Diaz.
The Reds want to strengthen their squad, of course they do, but in the majority of cases they arguably need to make room in their ranks first.
But first they needed to get through a pre-season tour of the United States and then get their full ranks back together.
Liverpool supporters might have been left frustrated so far this summer, but there appears to be a method in the madness.
with the Reds’ tour of the United States now over and less than a month to go until the transfer window closes, everything is pointing to a busy few weeks
