Liverpool want to make Euro 2024 winner Martin Zubimendi the first major signing of the Arne Slot era
The Reds have earmarked a move for Spain international Zubimendi as they look to bolster their defensive midfield options.
It is understood the 25-year-old has a release clause at Real Sociedad of €60million (£51.65m)
Liverpool have been scouring the market for a new number six all summer, with recruiting in the position having become a priority once Slot was able to start assessing the squad
Zubimendi came through the ranks at Sociedad for whom he has made 188 appearances and scored eight goals – half of which came last season
He featured in the Sociedad side that reached the Champions League round of 16 earlier this year
Zubimendi was called up for the recent European Championships, starting the group win over Albania and making brief substitute outings against Croatia and in the semi-final victory over France
The midfielder then replaced Manchester City’s Rodri at half-time in the final against England and helped Spain to a 2-1 triumph.
The move for Zubimendi would also represent a first significant transfer for Liverpool under new sporting director Richard Hughes.
Hughes already had a working relationship with the player’s agency Idub Global
Should it be completed, the transfer of Zubimendi would likely to trigger a number of moves in the market for Liverpool
among those players whose future could be called into question is defensive midfielder Wataru Endo, who has started only once in pre-season.
The Reds rejected a bid of around £12m from Marseille for the 31-year-old, but could now be more open to a departure.
