Marco Silva believes his Fulham side deserved better than to lose their seven-goal thriller against Liverpool – and revealed how he feared the dramatic winning goal was coming.
a disappointed Silva said:
“We deserved much more than we took. This afternoon, the way they scored the goals... the first is a world-class free-kick, then a great, great goal from Mac Allister.
"If Mac Allister stayed for two hours and tried it’s not going to happen, but this is football and he is a world-class player.
“They didn’t create many chances in the first half. The second half they had much more control but we didn’t want to give them space in behind.
"They had a big chance with (Darwin) Nunez (hitting the crossbar) on the counter, but apart from that nothing more.
“Then we knew that after with the changes it would be more open for us to try to score that (third) goal. We did it in a good style.”
Silva added
“It’s just because they are Liverpool,” he said. “In the moment they equalised the game, it was a moment we didn’t deserve.
“From that moment I knew there would be a strong reaction (from Liverpool), I wanted to make the substitution to calm down the game and the crowd but the game didn’t stop for a minute-and-a-half and they score.
“We know that these games are never 100% under control against these sides, these crowds, all this stuff and they can make something, but the game was more or less under control.
“Then another great finish from the edge of the box, of course in that moment I knew it was (coming) to the end of the match and I wanted to make a change to calm down the game, a bit more the crowd, but in that moment there was a mistake from us and they scored the fourth goal.”
Silva continued: “The boys have to be proud of what we did but unfortunately for us, we didn’t take what we deserve. This afternoon was a great Premier League match, it is good but you need points to lift the players’ confidence and belief they’re doing the right things.”
