Michael Owen brands Ian Wright 'smug' in debate over Liverpool and Arsenal title chances

Michael Owen has called Ian Wright "so smug" during a debate about the Premier League title race.

The Reds drew 1-1 with Manchester City on March 10. Meanwhile, Arsenal have been on a winning streak, with eight straight Premier League victories

Mikel Arteta's side are hoping to do better than last season when Man City snatched the title from them.

The Gunners' biggest challenge will be their match against City at the Etihad Stadium on March 31.

If they win, they'll be four points ahead of Pep Guardiola's team with only nine games left.

Owen shared his thoughts saying

"The old analogy that we've always been told is that the best team will win the Premier League. We always get told it.

"Well, if somebody wins it this year on goal difference or by a point, are we saying they're the best?

"I don't necessarily think the best team are going to win it this year."

Owen added:

"I think the best team are Manchester City. I think the most exciting team to watch are probably Liverpool, but the best team they've proven it for years and years now are Manchester City.

"But it won't necessarily be the best team who win the league. It might be Arsenal."

Kelly Cates then said:

"Although, if you're looking at Arsenal, they do have the best defence and this goalscoring record..." Owen laughed as he watched Wright's reaction and remarked: "You're so smug! ".

Wright answered back:

"We're dealing with facts! " Owen continued: "We're dealing with facts, but that doesn't mean Arsenal go to Manchester City as favourites."

Wright pointed out:

"The problem that Arsenal had was that they can lose to those teams, like we saw [last season] Southampton and West Ham,"

"I think what they've done is done a very good job of beating those teams convincingly.

"Now, if you can beat Man City, that kind of gives you the confidence to go into these games knowing you have to and can beat these teams."

"That is the reason why you have to go to City and beat them because you've shown you can beat the teams around you.

"If you beat City then it's definitely in your hands, because if you beat everyone else, you're going to keep them away from you."

This season, Arsenal won against Man City 1-0 and Liverpool 3-1 at home, and they drew 1-1 at Anfield. They boast a better record in the head-to-head games than their rivals.

Michael Owen believes Arsenal are the team to watch in the Premier League title race

Owen

"It is in a way [surprising],"

"You look at it and think 'if they're beating the big teams then are they the best team? '

"I'd definitely say they're the most efficient team at the moment. They don't look like conceding.

"When they've beaten those teams, they've been really impressive and hardly surrendered any chances, let alone goals. Arsenal are a serious threat."

He added: "If you asked me who is going to win the league in a couple of years. Well, Jurgen Klopp is going to have left.

"I can't imagine Pep Guardiola is going to be there for much longer. Man City and Liverpool are playing at their elite right now and all the cards are in their favour.

"But soon their managers are going to leave and I just think Arsenal are on [that upward trajectory].

"If you said who is going to be top in two years, I would think that they're probably the safer bet."
