Mohamed Salah called "a miserable so and so" by Liverpool legend as contract standoff goes on

Updated: Aug 15

Mohamed Salah has been branded a “miserable so and so” by Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson as the future of the Egyptian striker at the club remains uncertain.

Salah, 32, became the highest-paid player in the club’s history when he penned a three-year extension in July 2022, worth around £350,00 per week.

The goalscorer is entering the final 10 months of his deal, and with no agreement yet reached regarding another extension, the future of the club’s record Premier League goalscorer is swiftly becoming a huge issue.

With the club’s new regime of sporting director Richard Hughes and CEO of football Michael Edwards made official in June, settling the problem has been a major priority lest the club risk losing Salah for nothing next summer.

Salah will be allowed to speak to foreign clubs in January, and whether another sizeable deal comes in from the Pro League remains to be seen.

But ex-Reds defender Lawrenson believes the Saudi Pro League’s new craze of recruiting younger players rather than ageing stars makes another record-breaking bid unlikely.

Lawrenson

‘The Saudi Arabian clubs want younger players and that might be the reason they haven’t gone back for Mo Salah,” Lawrenson said while speaking to Paddy Power.

“He likes it at Liverpool, and he’s been excellent so they will want to keep him but if someone did knock on the door and offered £100 million, I think they’d take it, but it would depend on how longs left in the transfer window. He guarantees you goals. He can be a miserable so and so at times, but he guarantees goals.”

While Salah managed 18 goals in the Premier League last term (the most in Klopp's side), the return was the lowest of his Liverpool career to date

When Arne Slot was asked about the futures of Salah and fellow teammates Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold who have also entered the final year of their respective deals, the Dutchman emphasised that there were no sacred cows in his squad.

Slot

“No-one is bigger than the club but they’ve got a year left so hopefully the three of them are good for another three years at Liverpool,”

‘They are great players and personally I’d love to see them stay but we have to look at every situation. I think the players don’t think of the situation, I think they just want to play.”
