Pep Lijnders drops Liverpool transfer hint after new injury blow

Pep Lijnders has indicated Liverpool will not dip into the transfer market this month despite their lengthy absentee list

Lijnders indicated Liverpool will instead continue to put faith in their Academy players.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was the latest to join those on the sidelines when it emerged he will be missing for at least the next three weeks

It means 20-year-old right-back Conor Bradley is in contention for a start in the League Cup semi-final first leg

Lijnders believes Liverpool's squad overhaul in the summer and the impact of Academy graduates such as Jarell Quansah this season has lessened the need to further strengthen

Lijnders

"We spent a lot money in the summer," said the Reds assistant manager. "We really invested in the squad, the ownership really brought in the right players. Even when you have the injuries we have at the moment, they will be back in not that long hopefully.

"I think the difference between a good season and a top season is when you are going through these phases, how the squad reacts when players are missing. Mo going, how do (Diogo) Jota, Cody (Gakpo), Darwin (Nunez) and Lucho (Lios Diaz), how they step up, Harvey (Elliott) too.

"Then we always believe in the Academy as well. I think one thing is that you want to produce your own players to be able to fight, to compete and to win prizes. And the other reason why we have an Academy with 250 players there, they are running and dreaming and hoping in that in these moments when it's harder and the season gets tough in terms of injuries, that they can back you. "They so far always did."

Lijnders added:

"Look at Conor Bradley, he comes in, (Gabriel) Martinelli comes in fresh to go one v one constantly, and Conor, maybe the first one not but after that he reads, he learns and he can clear two or three.

"First one he gets outplayed and second one he learns and closes better. These boys learn at the same moment

"Conor and Bobby are not backup players, they are part of our squad. They are young, hungry and made for games like this.

"Look what happened to Jarell. We put him in at Newcastle when we were down to 10 men and after that he feels our trust, he knows that we really can rely on him and he makes the steps he makes.

"Young players just need the opportunity. They don't need criticism, they just need trust from the coaching staff.. That's what we try to do. These two boys are really good but we have more of them."
