Now that Alonso is being linked with a return to Liverpool as manager, Benitez has spoken about the recent rumours
The former Reds boss has issued a warning about the hype around his former midfielder.
Benitez believes social media has made an impact on the attention Alonso is getting in the early days of his managerial career
The former Liverpool boss also referenced Reds legend Steven Gerrard to make his point.
Benitez
"He’s a big name, good professional, good lad, clever, doing really well so I understand why,"
"[But] imagine Steven Gerrard was around and doing well. Then it would be: ‘Gerrard!’ With social media everything is going too fast so that people don’t see the big picture."
Benitez went on to add that he knew Alonso had the potential to be a manager during his time as a player
Benitez added
"He [Alonso] was clever and analysed," said Benitez. "When you explain things to some players, you have to repeat. Xabi was one who learned quickly."
