The Reds are weighing up a move for the midfielder as Arne Slot prioritizes a new No.6 for his squad ahead of the new season.
Reports of Liverpool’s interest first emerged on Wednesday, and have moved quickly since then.
Just a few hours later, The Athletic had suggested that Sociedad was expecting Zubimendi to agree to a move to Anfield, having become aware of the Reds’ interest.
The following day, The Times claimed that Liverpool was ‘confident’ of securing a deal.
It seems though that Sociedad hasn’t completely given up hope yet.
The Times has also suggested the La Liga side has launched a charm offensive to try and convince Zubimendi to stay.
And Sociedad haven’t exactly been subtle with their messaging on social media since then.
First, a video was posted of Zubimendi in training, seemingly showing that any potential move to Liverpool is far from a done deal.
Then La Real announced its squad for Friday’s friendly against Union Berlin in Germany, with Zubimendi included.
Nothing out of the ordinary there, except Sociedad chose to make the announcement using a graphic with Zubimendi front and center.
Even to the less cynical of supporters, this looks like a defiant attempt to from the Spanish club to suggest the 25-year-old is going nowhere
Zubimendi does have a $65m (£51m/€60m) release clause in his contract, which would leave Sociedad rather powerless if Liverpool was to meet it.
Then it would be up to Zubimendi to decide whether he wants the move, with reports already suggesting he could be keen despite previously snubbing the likes of Arsenal and Barcelona.
