Rio Ferdinand sent Virgil van Dijk text message from someone else's phone during Euros

Rio Ferdinand used Jose Fonte's phone to send a cheeky message to Liverpool hero Virgil van Dijk.

Not content with merely watching the football at the European Championships, Ferdinand invited the former West Ham and Southampton defender onto one of his podcasts

A key feature of their show is for the guests to spin a wheel detailing a wide range of things they must do.

The option Fonte landed on was: "phone message haha" which left him feeling rather concerned.

Having played for a wide variety of clubs in Portugal, England and China as well as earning 50 international caps for his country, Fonte has a large list of famous faces in his contacts.

Ferdinand decided to drop Van Dijk a text using Fonte's phone.

When Fonte landed on that section of the wheel during his appearance on the Rio Ferdinand Presents Five podcast,

Ferdinand said:

“You’ve got to give me some names who you have got.” After it was pointed out that he would have Cristiano Ronaldo’s phone number,

Fonte replied: "No, don’t bother the man."

Ferdinand then asked: “Van Dijk” and Fonte replied: “You can text Van Dijk”.

Fonte looked concerned when he was told that Ferdinand would text the Liverpool defender as if he was the one saying it.

Ferdinand suggested that he was going to write: “Is Rio a better defender than you?” Instead, he wrote: “Watching some old Premier League games back, Rio was a monster. Was he your idol growing up?”

There was a mild grimace on Fonte's face when he watched Ferdinand hit send. Van Dijk did not reply to the text message while they were recording the show.

Van Dijk would've been still coming to terms with the Netherlands' dramatic 2-1 loss to England in the Euro 2024 semi-final when Ferdinand played the prank on him
