Darwin Nunez has broken his silence on the criticism and abuse the Liverpool striker continues to face since joining the club.
The Uruguayan made headlines earlier this month for deleting all but one of his Reds images
Supporters were also quick to spot him heading straight down the tunnel without applauding the crowd following that win over Spurs
it was also noted how he didn’t clap departing manager Jurgen Klopp during his guard of honour against Wolves
Nunez has endured a difficult end to the season, scoring just once from his final 13 appearances of the season -
Missing a number of golden opportunities in front of goal during the final two months of the campaign as Liverpool’s title-challenge fell apart, he lost his place in Klopp’s starting XI as a result.
He started just one of the Reds’ final seven matches
Aware of the criticism and abuse he continues to face, Nunez has admitted that while he used to look at such comments and was affected by them
Nunez
“From the moment you start playing and until you retire, there will always be someone who will criticise you,”
“I avoid reading those comments.
“Before, I did look at them a lot and it affected me.
“Whoever says that those negative comments do not affect them is lying, those negative comments that are directed towards you will always affect you.
“I never look at the negative comments on social media, at least now I'm not looking at anything, not even the good stuff. If a game goes badly for me, I rely on my family.
“When things go badly for me, I get hot, but I try to laugh with my family and not show my son the anger I have, what happened in the game is already there, it's already happened, and there is always revenge.”
Nunez has also been subjected to derogatory chants from opposition fans, with Klopp even responding to such chants after the striker scored a last-minute winner against Nottingham Forest in March.
The 24-year-old has now admitted that he did not understand such chants, as he revealed what Klopp said to him about them in the dressing room after the game.
Nunez:
“They tell me everything,”
“But I ignore those comments because they are of no use to me.
“In that game, the Nottingham fans were singing to me. But I didn't understand anything, thank goodness.
“I ended up scoring the goal, and then the coach in the locker room said 'Screw them'.”
Nunez’s future at Liverpool was thrown into doubt following his social media deletion spree, though reports claim that new head coach Arne Slot intends to retain the striker’s services.
