Graeme Souness believes Liverpool have found two "stars" in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai but is unconvinced Wataru Endo will have a major part to play this season
The Reds moved early in the transfer market to secure deals for Mac Allister and Szoboszlai and have already witnessed the quality possessed by both players
Their arrivals at the club were followed by a deal being done by Japan international Wataru Endo, who remains somewhat of an unknown quantity, before Ryan Gravenberch was added on deadline day.
Sharing his take on the summer business done by Jurgen Klopp's side,
Souness said:
"I like Szoboszlai and I am a big fan of Mac Allister. With Endo, we will wait and see.
"Getting good reviews playing in the Bundesliga doesn't mean you will be a success in the Premier League, which is very demanding and the intensity is greater there than anywhere else. "
"Let's see how he deals with that."
"The fact they offered over £100m for Caicedo tells you he [Klopp] sees that area as it needs strengthening.
"The way I see Liverpool right now is they have enough goals in the team, the defence is more than good enough, the keeper is more than good enough but the blend he is going to have to use in midfield is not quite right.
"I would like to see them get another central defender as Matip can't keep himself fit and another central midfielder. Endo, with the money they paid, would suggest he is a squad player."
Souness added
“The time to strengthen is when you are at the top and you're getting players in who don't have to make an impact right away. Last summer, I wrote an article saying Liverpool needed to strengthen in midfield and they didn't. A couple of weeks after that, they went and got Arthur Melo and he didn't play any time for Liverpool.
"When you looked at the age, it was not rocket science [it was going to end badly]. They were at an age where you should have been watching it very closely. They have done it now and I think Mac Allister and Szoboszlai are going to be stars for Liverpool, but I would still like them to have an out-and-out top-class holding midfielder."
