Virgil van Dijk reveals what he is dreading about Jurgen Klopp exit and drops hint over Liverpool future

Virgil van Dijk has admitted he is dreading Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool this summer.

Liverpool have already waved off a number of club legends who have won every major honour with the club in recent years

Jordan Henderson, Roberto Firmino, James Milner, and Fabinho following in the footsteps of the likes of Sadio Mane, Divock Origi, and Gini Wijnaldum last summer.

But Klopp’s own departure will be accompanied by a whole new level of emotion, with Van Dijk admitting he will find it difficult to say goodbye

Van Dijk

“I am quite an emotional person and I always find it very difficult to say goodbye to someone,”

"That will certainly be the case now."

“It's not just the manager who goes, it's more people. Pepijn (Lijnders), an important person in the staff and I could go on and on.

“Saying goodbye is not something I am looking forward to, but we can make it very nice by winning prizes together.

“That's the way life is. You see each other at the club almost daily and even more often than your own wife and children. You experience highlights together, but also difficult moments.

“That creates a bond that is very close, especially at a club like Liverpool, one big family.

“And then after a few years it's suddenly over. I hope, but am actually quite sure, that the club manages to preserve that unique atmosphere of mutual connection for the future.”

Van Dijk has at least helped to ensure that Klopp’s last season at Liverpool is accompanied by silverware, having scored the winner in last month’s League Cup final victory

Admitting it was the perfect day, Van Dijk is determined to win more trophies for both club and country

Van Dijk added

“I had thought of this beforehand, because it ended a perfect day in the right way,”

“My family was in the stands, it was an exciting game, and I scored the winning goal.

“All in all, that made me so very proud as captain. For me there was nothing better than receiving an award, my first indeed as captain, together with the manager who has been and continues to be so incredibly important to the club and also to me personally.”
