Virgil van Dijk says the entire squad are praying for the safe release of Luis Diaz's father as the captain reiterated the support Liverpool are on hand to provide their colleague and his family.
Luis Manuel Diaz was kidnapped over a week ago in Colombia by rebel group the National Liberation Army of Colombia (ELN)
The Liverpool forward came off the bench to score an emotional equaliser on Sunday to ensure Jurgen Klopp's men avoided a shock defeat
After the game, Diaz was called posted a message to his social media accounts where he pleaded with the ELN to return his father back to the family
Van Dijk says he and the rest of the squad will continue to rally around the 26-year-old as the harrowing ordeal drags on in South America.
Van Dijk
"To call it a 'difficult week' is quite the understatement,"
"It means a lot, it means a lot. He has been training with us this week but for him it's so fresh knowing what is going on. He feels like being with us is his safe place as well and that helps him.
"We are here for him and we said it last week. It is an absolutely horrible situation and we hope there is a solution but we are here for him and everyone should support him and hopefully we can get it sorted as soon as possible.
"He is also disappointed because he also wanted to win but obviously there are probably a lot of emotions going on in his head.
"I am glad and it must have been [written] tonight that he should score anyway. You know I am happy for him but hopefully we can get his father back as soon as possible.
"You can't imagine it. That is the scary part of it, the only thing we can do is hope that the authorities and the people there manage to find him safe and sound, get him back to his family and we pray for him as well."
Van Dijk refused to use the situation surrounding Diaz's family as an excuse as the Reds struggled
Van Dijk added
"Was it difficult to perform? No. Obviously when [the kidnapping] happened, before the last game against Nottingham Forest, it was a shock to everyone and we spoke about it but it should give us extra motivation.
"Lucho (Diaz) doesn't want us to suffer from what he is going through. He wants to take fuel from it and that's what we all know.
"That is what we spoke about last week as it was very fresh then. We kept it going all week and everyone is very happy for him today but it's still a horrible situation that is not resolved and hopefully we can get that going."
Van Dijk said continued
"We should have won it, so I am very disappointed we never got the three points, especially the way we are and the situation we are in and what we want to become as well.
"We had the opportunities and the chances and I think if you score one of those then it becomes a completely different game.
"Obviously they only need one half-chance and that is what they did. Like I said, the disappointment is high at the moment and it's good that we didn't lose, of course, because that would have been a lot worse. But I think we could have made it a lot easier for ourselves.
I can't speak about the decisions but (for the Luton goal) I headed the ball and it came against his elbow apparently, I think. I don't know. Obviously the counter attack starts and they look if it's a penalty yes or no, they decide it's not.
"It's quite a good advantage for them, obviously they start a counter-attack and they score from it, so you know I don't know the rules exactly in this case but it shouldn't come to a decision if it's a penalty or not to get a good result. I think we had the opportunities ourselves to get a good result and we didn't do it.
"The same as the wrestling moment before that. He can give it but he didn't. Obviously it's tough for us but like I said, it starts with ourselves and we had the opportunities to win it and we haven't taken them.
"I don't think it was down to the atmosphere. It is like I said before, we had the first chance after maybe 20 minutes, we score that and it is a completely different game.
"But we didn't and they only needed one opportunity and the results here this season [at Kenilworth Road] have been very small margins.
"That is down to how they play, they defend well, very compact and solid and set-pieces they are good at. I respect that but we could have made it a lot easier, especially with the clear-cut chances we had.
"Nothing about Luton surprised us. We prepared well, we saw the footage, their strengths, their weaknesses and I think obviously looking at us, possession-wise we were quite strong but obviously when we lost the ball we weren't.
"We weren't winning the ball back as quickly as possible and the spaces were a little bit too big, especially in the midfield areas. That is something we have to work on and we will."
