‘Wish we’d learn’ - Jurgen Klopp issues Liverpool squad reality check after ‘comments’ noticed

Klopp has urged his Liverpool team to start justifying their hype after receiving a sobering reality check during the past week

Liverpool's new-look side has attracted plaudits after a strong opening to the season.

The recent form, though, has exposed a number of ongoing issues within the squad, not least the lack of a regular recognised defensive midfielder

Klopp was unhappy with the shortage of aggression from his players at Toulouse

The Liverpool boss has dismissed the notion such displays are part of the process of an evolving team.

“I wish it would not be necessary, to be honest," said the Reds boss. "I wish we would learn it quickly, to be honest. It is definitely very important.

"Generally we are in a positive situation and it is important to learn to deal with that. There has been a lot of praise.

"There have been a lot of comments. I am happy with that for the team and individuals. But in these moments you have to be there.

"It really feels like this (Toulouse) and Luton is a real learning curve, and not just because we are away.

"It was a similar atmosphere (at both games). That should not be a problem. We had that at Newcastle, for example, a real atmosphere (when Liverpool won 2-1).

"We have to learn. Is it part of the learning process? Yes. But it still feels not great.”

Asked if the last week had been a wake-up call, Klopp said:

“Yes, that is how we have to use it. Of course we have to react. I really think it was a goal (Quansah against Toulouse) but would that have made it any better?

"We really have to defend better. We had four-versus-one situations and they won the ball and come out. We can’t have one versus one with three watching. That is what we have to change.

"We can be a really good team. We have shown that. We have shown what we can be. But I want it now (clicks fingers). We cannot have what happened here (at Toulouse). We were not aggressive enough. It was as easy as that.

"They were much more aggressive than us. Yes, they play at home. Yes, they have their crowd. But now if we are thinking we need Anfield - we need Anfield anyway - Brentford will come and they be physical and we have to be ready.

"I want us to learn from this. We can lose a game. My God. But we have to use it to learn the right things, especially. To win a football game, you need to be aggressive.
